Somewhere in the fine print of Australia’s Federation agreement, buried beneath the language of unity and shared destiny, is a number that Western Australians have been arguing about for 125 years.
In the financial year 2024, Western Australia [WA] sent approximately A$112 billion to Canberra in corporate taxes, personal income taxes, GST, and other payments.
It received back approximately A$73 billion in Commonwealth expenditure.
The net outflow ~ the amount extracted from Western Australia and redistributed elsewhere ~ was approximately A$39 billion.
That is A$13,000 for every man, woman, and child in the state.
Nineteen times the per-person contribution of New South Wales.
Western Australia produces almost half of Australia’s exports.
It contains the world’s largest iron ore deposits, some of the most significant LNG reserves on the planet, and a land mass larger than Western Europe.
It has been, for most of the past two decades, the engine of Australian prosperity ~
the reason the Commonwealth could weather the Global Financial Crisis, the COVID recession, and every other economic storm of the modern era.
And for 125 years, residents have been asking the same question: how much longer?

This year, a group of lawyers, economists, and medical professionals decided to stop asking and start building.
The result is Secession by Western Australia ~ a 400-page manifesto, constitutional draft, and policy blueprint for peaceful independence.

A Grievance 125 Years in the Making
Western Australia’s secessionist sentiment is not new, and it is not fringe. Secessionism has been a recurring feature of Western Australia’s political landscape since shortly after Federation in 1901, including a successful but unimplemented 1933 state referendum.
That 1933 vote is the key fact that every conversation about WA secession returns to. The 1933 Referendum on Western Australia seceding from the Commonwealth of Australia was supported by 75% of the vote.
Astonishingly, that lawful referendum was disallowed by the British Parliament under British law.
Read that carefully. Western Australians voted ~ in a legal, constitutional referendum ~ to leave the Federation.
By a margin of three to one.
The result was overridden by a foreign parliament.
The matter was never resolved.
It was simply set aside, and the Federation continued.
